Thank you to everyone who took part in the recent public consultation on the proposed refurbishment of Mary Datchelor Playing Fields. Over 150 people shared their views, providing a clear and valuable picture of community opinion.

Strong overall support

The consultation shows clear backing for investment in the playing fields.

  • 87% of respondents support the proposals overall

  • 91% said Yes or Mostly Yes to the overall improvements to the site

  • Improved drainage was the most strongly supported element, with 92% in favour

  • Over 85% of respondents fully or mostly supported all elements of the proposals, which included drainage, landscaping, improved sports facilities

  • There was particularly high enthusiasm for improved sports provision. The all-season football and rugby pitch was the most requested facility, selected by 77% of respondents, alongside strong support for upgraded tennis courts, improved cricket facilities, athletics provision and better lighting

Preferences were also expressed on the pavilion location, with Option 1 receiving the highest level of support, building a new pavilion in the existing location, while a substantial proportion of respondents also supported Option 2, next to the railway and below Hunts Slip Road. A smaller but still significant portion were also open to either option.

Community priorities

Many respondents highlighted the importance of the playing fields continuing to serve a wide range of users. Community access, shared use with neighbouring schools and long-term sustainability were frequently mentioned as priorities that underpin support for the project.

Listening to concerns

The consultation also highlighted areas where people would like reassurance as plans are developed further. These include:

  • How community access will be protected and managed

  • How lighting, noise and environmental impacts will be managed

  • Traffic and parking pressures at busy times

Some respondents, especially those living closest to the site, raised more specific concerns, particularly about sports lighting, evening use and noise from potential padel courts. These points are being carefully considered as part of the next stage of design and planning.

Next steps

The consultation results show a strong mandate for improving the playing fields, with a clear expectation that the final proposals should be sensitive to the surrounding area, inclusive and well managed. The feedback received will help to shape the next phase of design, ensuring the project delivers high-quality facilities, while respecting the community in which it is located.

Further updates will be shared as the plans progress. We are currently aiming for a planning submission in Autumn/Winter 2026.

Thank you again to everyone who contributed.
